History of First Baptist Bamberg

On November 3, 1872 a group of eleven people met together for the first time forming the Bamberg Baptist Church.  The congregation prayed, "May the Lord make this little one a mighty one."  The first location was on West Church Street next to the Bamberg school building.  In 1894, the first building was sold and a brick structure was built with a tall steeple on the corner of Railroad Ave. and Carlisle St.  By 1905, the church had a parsonage located on the corner of Railroad Ave. and Cannon St.  The sanctuary building we now worship in was built and dedicated in March 1928.  In the summer of 1946, the church bought a new parsonage situated across Carlisle St. from the church.  The need for a new educational building was evident and additional property to the rear of the present building was purchased.  The educational building was built and moved in on Easter Sunday, April 6, 1958.  In 1960, Dr. Robert Black initiated the construction of a recreational building and is known today as the "Robert Black Fellowship Hall."  Our old bell was restored in 1967 and placed in a frame at the side of the sanctuary.  In 1972, the "little one" which had begun by eleven people was now a century old.  A celebration that now a "mighty one" stood where the "little one" had begun.  The church has continued to grow and expand God's Kingdom.  In 2005, the church completely renovated the current sanctuary.  Today, with the heart of waking up a "sleeping giant," the church is progressing forward.
